Edge dressing is applied to the visible edges of soles to restore the color and gloss of the edges. Most sole materials will take edge dressing, although results can vary. Edge dressing is generally only necessary on soles that have a colored edge different from the general material of the sole. Leather soles in particular tend to be painted on the outside only and not dyed through, so wear to the color on the edge of the soles is very noticeable. In contrast, rubber that is uniformly colored throughout will not be improved nearly as much by edge dressing.

Edge dressing can be applied either by an applicator built into the bottle or by a cotton wool applicator. Load the applicator with the dressing and then apply the dressing along the visible edges of the sole. Allow the dressing to dry for a couple of minutes. It is often best to test the dressing prior to the boots being walked in, as wet edge dressing can stain floors and carpeting. It is advisable to use a cloth scrap to wipe off any edge dressing that has wound up on the underside of the sole.

It should be noted that on boots and shoes with a significantly high heel, it is a good practice to dress the front face of the heel. Even though that surface is largely not seen, the parts near the side are often visible and an undressed face can be noticeable.
